Weather

Weather in Switzerland tends to be pretty much the same as England and is very unpredictable. Regardless of the time of the year, it is advisable to carry an umbrella. It is a good idea to check online for the current weather Paris prior to travelling.

Passengers can be well prepared by ensuring they are carrying appropriate clothing, footwear and accessories. Passengers should also be aware that during the winter months most of the sightseeing will be in the dark as, in Western Europe, the day becomes dark very early during winter like in the UK.

Whilst in Switzerland during excursions to mountain tops passengers may experience temperatures between 0 °c and 2 °c with snow falling, so please be prepared by bringing appropriate footwear and clothing.

Baggage

Star Tours operate a luggage handling service under which the driver will load and unload one piece of luggage per person from the coach (maximum 20kg). Passengers’ will have to carry their luggage to and from the coach to the hotel room.

In addition, you can also carry one piece of small hand luggage, which can fit under their seat or in the overhead compartment. It is advisable for one passenger to carry a small and bag or backpack between their group in which they can carry essentials like water, tissues, cameras etc.

Clothing & Accessories

For travelling overnight, you are recommended to carry your toothbrush and essential toiletries in your hand luggage as you will be stopping at services in the morning to freshen up, before commencing a day of sightseeing, and will not be checking into the hotel until the following evening.

During summer months, it is advisable to wear light garments and perhaps keep a light jacket or sweater handy. It is advisable to carry a light waterproof jacket or umbrella, as well as a hat or cap.

Passengers should also carry suitable footwear as per the itinerary of the tour e.g. comfortable trainers for a tour, which includes walking or suitable footwear/boots for excursions to mountaintops such as Mt. Titlis or Mt. Jungfrau. It is advisable that passengers carry appropriate clothing warm waterproof jacket and extra layers of clothing. Please ensure you bring closed footwear. It is advisable to carry scarves and gloves as well extra socks to the mountain top excursions.

Passengers should also carry travel adapters so they can charge their electronic items in their hotel room (as the sockets in Europe and elsewhere vary from those in the UK). Passengers may also want to carry a small travel iron, hair dryer, kettle etc, as many hotel rooms will not have these facilities.

Your mobile phone may be able to receive calls whilst on holiday, you can check with your network operator to switch on the roaming feature of your mobile, there is usually an additional charge to receive incoming calls whilst aboard.

Please ensure you carry all medication you will need on tour as well as names and doses of medications you are taking or copies of prescriptions.

Currency

In Switzerland the currency you will require will be Swiss Francs (CHF). Star Tours’ advices passengers to exchange any spending money for their holiday before they actually travel. Whilst on tour it is very inconvenient and not all places we will be visiting will have ATM machines or accept credit/debit cards.

We also advice our passengers to keep some Euros on them whilst on tour as the coach will be travelling via France and Germany to reach Switzerland.

Children & Young Infants

As this is an overnight journey please ensure you have everything you may need in your hand luggage as you will not be checking into the hotel till the following evening. The coach will stop at service in the morning for you to freshen up.

Car seats are not provided on coaches but passengers should carry car seats with travelling infants for comfort and safety. most coaches will not have hot water to heat up milk bottles (not suitable for drinking). Therefore it is the passengers’ responsibility to make sure of necessary arrangements for any children in their group.

Milk and baby food cannot be provided by the hotel or restaurants and passengers are advised to carry ready to drink milk whilst on tour.

Please also note that not all hotels provide a kettle so if hot water is required for warming milk etc in the hotel then it is advisable to carry a bottle warmer / kettle. Pushchairs can be kept in the baggage lockers of the coach.

Wheelchairs

We will accept light weight manual wheelchairs for travel, subject to them being capable of being stowed in the luggage hold of the coach. It is also essential that a family member is also on the tour to push their wheelchair. Star Tours will also request hotels for suitably equipped rooms; however, this is only on a request basis and cannot be guaranteed.

Tour Managers

Professional tour managers & local guides accompany our tours throughout the itinerary, on rare occasions the Tour Manager may not meet passengers at their dedicated pick up point but at a later stage, the driver will be there to take care of any of the passengers’ needs.

Your tour manager will accompany you to the sights, and be there to answer any questions you may have, and provide advice and assistance. If you have, any concerns please feel free to ask your tour manager whilst on tour. The tour manager and Tour guides will conduct the tours in English.

Please ensure your tour manager has the mobile number that you are carrying with you on tour. On coach tours, the tour manager will provide passengers with their contact details for the duration of the tour on the first day.

Please note that on the first day of your tour you may collect a list of details for the hotels you will be staying in, as reference. In case you are separated from the group and need to make your way back to the hotel.

Coaches

All coaches are fitted with arm rests, TV, DVD/CD and toilet facilities. W.C. facilities on coaches have limited capacities and therefore we advice passengers to use them only on an ‘emergency’ basis.

All coaches are either air conditioned or air cooling systems. Only food which is dry and cold can be taken onto the coach. Curries, chips and other hot food are not allowed to be consumed on the coach. In addition, chewing gum and ice cream is also not allowed on the coach. Examples of food people bring to snack on include crisps, biscuits, chevda, drinks etc.

Seating Allocation

Please remember our staff cannot take requests for any seats. Seat numbers will be given to you, on day one of your tour. Passengers with children in their group will not be seated near the front due to EU regulations & company policy. Please note that all seats on the coach are the same, and have the same level of comfort, do not be disappointed if your seats are near the back of the coach. Your holiday experience will not be ruined due to this.

Distances & Journeys

The drive from Calais to your first place of interest will be about 9 hours. It is advisable passengers carry necessities that they may need for the day such as water, dry snacks, cameras etc. with them in their hand luggage. On the first and last day passengers must carry their passports in their hand luggage as passports will be needed in immigration.

For travelling overnight, you are recommended to carry your toothbrush and essential toiletries in your hand luggage as you will be stopping at services in the morning to freshen up, before commencing a day of sightseeing, and will not be checking into the hotel until the following evening.

A reduction on the tour price will be applied for the second child with no bed.

Visiting Mountain Tops

You should only make trips to high altitudes if you feel healthy. The following recommendations apply:

  • An advanced age is no barrier to high altitude. For blood pressure patients who are well controlled with medication the altitude is not a concern.

  • Asthmatics can travel to high altitudes without any problems. High-altitude air is less polluted with particles that can cause an asthma attack.

  • Epileptics who are well controlled with medication should be able to negotiate the altitude.

  • Pregnant women: There may be a certain risk for pregnancy even without pre-existing diseases over 2500-3000 metres. Caution is therefore advised

If in doubt, please consult your doctor in advance.

Infants: Short-term stays at the mountain tops are unproblematic. Infants and young children are often unable to equalise pressure during descent and are therefore increasingly at risk of ear irritation. Regular swallowing (drinking, sucking on a bottle) during the descent can prevent the occurrence of irritation.

Because children can chill faster than adults, always pay attention to sufficient protection from the cold at high altitude. Sunglasses and good sunscreen are necessary on the glacier!

High altitude visits not recommended for

  • Lung and heart patients who are already short of breath while at rest or when climbing stairs are advised not stay at high altitude. Patients with angina pectoris or severe impaired performance with heart enlargement and heart failure should not visit high altitude.

  • Coronary artery disease (angina pectoris) and heart enlargement with medical therapy should not visit high altitude.

  • Patients with a pronounced risk profile for cardiovascular disease (smoker + high blood pressure + diabetes + high blood fats + overweight + occasional chest pain) should consult the doctor before visiting high altitude.

  • Do not stay at high altitude after having striated muscles or a stroke.

Other practical tips

  • A decongestant nasal spray is recommended for colds before descent, in order to prevent ear irritation caused by lack of pressure balancing.

  • The ambient temperature drops with increasing altitude. Therefore, be sure to wear warm clothes for trips over 1500 metres, even in during the heat of summer.

  • Nicotine and alcohol in excess before or during the trip can ruin your day

Additional Excursions

Passengers may be offered additional excursions that are designed to enhance the holiday experience and are not included in the tour cost. We take great pride in the fact that we can give these prices and what is included and how long the excursion will be, to passenger before they go on tour. These excursions are priced separately and operated solely by the driver and tour leader.

Passengers are entitled to refuse any additional excursion. Only excursions listed in the additional excursions section of a tour can be conducted by a tour manager.
